The Pub

Dating from the 1700’s the Inn on the Square is a traditional Devon market town centre pub, situated on the town’s main square.

The Inn started life as ‘The Golden Lion Tap’ serving the servants of the wealthy who stayed at the ‘Golden Lion Hotel’, now the Royal & Fortesque Hotel - before becoming known as Mugfords.

During 2006/7 the Inn, whilst retaining many of its original features, was extensively refurbishes and renamed Inn on the Square, allowing customers to enjoy the charm and atmosphere of a 18th century coaching inn with modern facilities.

The main bar offers a selection of beers, wines & spirits in a warm and friendly atmosphere and real ale has recently been reintroduced. For the more competitive, darts, pool and a choice of traditional board games are available for all ages.

Families with well behaved dogs - and children - are welcome in this area until early evening.

The front window seating area offers a pleasant aspect to enjoy a lunchtime or evening meal and on balmier days you may choose to eat ‘al fresco’. More formal dining is available upstairs in the first floor restaurant overlooking the square and clock tower.

Wi-Fi is available for those wishing to remain in contact with the ‘real’ world.
